Band Together

It’s up to us here at Voice My Story to do our part to help aid the stress of those experiencing Homelessness, by offering programs and resources to the different aspects of homelessness. At Voice My Story we band together to create a stronger tomorrow.

Reflection on Homelessness

Homelessness is a systemic problem and nonprofits are part of the systemic solutions that are offered in North America. Homelessness can occur for so many reasons, family problems, a history of violence or abuse, mental disorders, drug use issues, language or cultural disadvantage, lack of education, lack of access to resources, program de-funding.

The longer that someone is homeless the more challenging rehabilitation and self-sufficiency can become. For example, long gaps in a resume can make prospective employers doubtful. Long periods of isolation can make interacting with general society more trying. Helping prevent homelessness is the best solution towards increased homeless-related hardship and at Voice My Story we can provide imperative help.

Where and How Nonprofits Can Help?

Voice My Story can offer many different kinds of support to help ease the stresses and vulnerabilities of homelessness. Emergency shelter resources can be made available by Voice My Story for individuals fleeing an emergency situation. Emergencies can be defined in many ways from refuge fleeing or someone leaving a domestic abuse situation. Affordable housing resources are offered for a long-term plan. SNAP food benefits programs are made available to those in need, however, the application process can take time. Voice My Story  can help individuals fill in the paperwork and offer temporary solutions such as school lunches, food drives, soup kitchens, food banks, and even farmer’s market deals that allow for healthy fresh food purchases.

Resource Help

Voice My Story can offer free resources for legal advice for various issues such as benefit claims, child custody advice, helping to issue protection orders for domestic violence survivors, and so on. Clothing, toy, and home goods drives can be funneled by our nonprofit to help replace items for those in need, as well as discounts at thrift stores offered by nonprofit vouchers, and even programs that help increase the hire rate of a work candidate through better attire. Resume building and presentation skills for job interviews can also help some candidates thrive. Medical treatment resources and preventative treatment and testing resources are something Voice My Story can supply. Rehabilitation programs for mental instability, stress management, and mental health issues are sometimes offered free of charge or for low cost. Child care resources can be offered for parents in need, especially if the need is job search-related.
